  REVIEW:

Reign Over Me . . . Adam Sandler’s first non-comedic performance since, well . . . Punch-Drunk Love.

Definitely not your typical Adam Sandler movie, Reign Over Me is not a comedy, but a pretty heavy drama.  Adam Sandler is Charlie Fineman.  Charlie lost his wife and 3 children in the 9/11 attacks.  He couldn’t deal with the grief, so he lives a life of denial and barely gets by from day-to-day.  His old college roommate Alan Johnson, played by Don Cheadle, bumps into him on the street one day and finds that Charlie can’t remember his past.  They try to become friends again, but before he can really move on, Charlie must face his demons.  Alan has every intent on helping his old friend, but finds he has some of his own demons to conquer.  Both men face making tough choices, but their friendship may be the strength they each need.

Reign Over Me definitely has some very touching, very profound moments.  And, the acting is surprisingly strong . . . perhaps Adam Sander has finally spent some of that $20 million a movie on acting classes!  But, the movie is rather long, and the story has a few very strange and senseless twists.  Plus, you’ll feel like you’re just seeing a small part of the story; there’s not much real resolution, and it seems like the movie could pretty much end anytime, or go on for days.  Combined with the depressing subject matter, Reign Over Me might not be worthwhile for everyone.

  MOVIE NIGHT TRAFFIC LIGHT:

On the Movie Night Traffic Light on a scale of GREEN meaning “Go – it’s a must see”, YELLOW meaning “Caution – it’s okay” and RED meaning “No - stop don’t do it."

We rate Reign Over Me YELLOW.  Caution – the acting is very good, the story is a downer.
